It’s not you, it’s me

Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD). RSD is the experience of severe emotional pain because of perceived failure or rejection. While it’s not a formal diagnostic category, it is a recognized syndrome.

RSD is not specific to ADHD –– it is linked to other mental health conditions –– but occurs at higher rate for those with ADHD.

RSD can manifest emotionally, behaviorally, and socially. Fear of rejection may lead one to avoid social situations altogether or react defensively to criticism. Imposter syndrome is common, leading to overachieving behaviors and perfectionism. Minor setbacks are catastrophized and lead to rumination, which can be intense.

This is real for me. I used to think I was just too sensitive. But, while I may take days to respond to an email or text because I have to rehearse what to say, I feel certain I have said something hurtful or stupid if someone doesn’t respond to my email or text right away.

What works best for me in managing RSD is intentional reflection, writing my thoughts down, and therapy. Mindfulness of what might trigger these feelings is something I practice everyday to varying effectiveness. But, it’s a start.

Do you experience RSD? If so, drop a comment on how you manage rejection or criticism.
